Jonathan tasks Nigerians on high productivity
President Goodluck Jonathan has stressed the need for all Nigerians to embrace high productivity in their professions to increase the country’s economic growth and development.
Jonathan stated this on Thursday in Abuja at the 2014 National Productivity Day Celebration and conferment of National Productivity Order of Merit (NPOM) Award where the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) was among the awardees.
Presenting the award in Abuja at 2014 National Productivity Day, the President who was represented by the Vice President, Muhammad Namadi Sambo, said it was in recognition of NEMA’s impressive and timely responses to disasters as well as the success it has achieved in the promotion of disaster risk reduction in the country.
He said the award has placed a greater obligation of responsibility on the recipients for the national development.
“It is true that productivity is a driving force to achieve economic growth and enhance the competitiveness of organisations, enterprises and individuals in the global market.
“We must develop a high productivity mindset with a view to developing an institutionalisation of a culture that accelerate growth in all sectors of our economy and enhance the welfare of our society.
“The significant of today’s lies in the need to revive our entire men and women through the idea of higher productivity in every sphere of our personal and corporate national lives,” he noted.
He also assured of government’s determination to defeat insurgency and terrorism.
“Peace and security are essential for accelerated growth and development of any nation, however, despite that our country faces unprecedented security challenge at this moment, our resolve to defeat the evil forces of insurgency and terrorism stand and will never waiver. When citizens and government work together, no public threat can be too much for us to defeat.
“I appeal to all to support the government and security agencies in our determined efforts to rid our country of these agents of retrogression. Those who offer support to the insurgents must know that they are not just doing disfavour to the government but share in the entire criminal culpability,” the president maintained.
Receiving the award on behalf of the agency, its Director General, Alhaji Muhammad Sani Sidi, said:
“ It’s indeed a recognition of humble contribution by the agency to the overall national development.”
He appreciated the award and said it was a call on the agency to greater dedication, greater performance and commitments.
The 2014 National Productivity of Order of Merit (NPOM) Award was conferred on NEMA along with other beneficiaries that include Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka, Kano State Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources and Katsina State Primary Health Care Development Agency.
The National Productivity Centre, in an earlier letter of nomination of the award to NEMA said the agency was selected after a rigorous process and found worthy for the honour. It said the agency had been very visible and its impacts effectively felt in crisis situations such as building collapses, air crashes, market fires, floods, among several others across the country.
The agency has also been credited for its prompt and continuing intervention in the present humanitarian challenges in the north east as a result of the insurgency.
