Operators Assume Control Of Electricity Metering Facilities
BY ABU IDRISU:
Control of metering facilities stationed at the electricity trading points across Nigeria was yesterday taken over by The Generation, Transmission and Distribution operators in Nigeria’s Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
The meters which measure the amount of electricity supplied across board were previously managed by the operator of the Nigerian Electricity Market (ONEM) also known as the Market Operator (MO), who now assumes a new supervisory responsibility.
The development which is part of the conditions precedent for the official commencement of the Transitional Electricity Market (TEM), grants operators the chance to manage their energy supplies which is also in line with requirements of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
It is expected that this development would further grant the affected market participants the responsibility to transparently and efficiently manage their metering interfaces with a view to cutting down on the industry’s loss statistics.
Speaking during the event in Abuja, minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, explained that obvious gaps presently being experienced in revenue collection within the electricity market could soon be eliminated with the new development.
Poor revenue collection by distribution companies, electricity transmission losses and instances of unfair trade practices across board have been reported as part of reasons for failure to meet the markets’ settlement expectations.
Nebo stated that generating and distribution companies as well as transmission service provider would now have to commit to good governance practices in their dealings as the MO no longer has the mandate to run their metering points.
