Gov race: Civil society wants PDP to consider Taraba acting gov
A coalition of 45 civil society organisations under the auspices of Rights Monitoring Groups (RMG), has asked the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ,to give priority to the acting Governor of Taraba State, Alhaji Garba Umar, as its candidate in 2015 governorship contest.
RMG national coordinator, Mr Olufemi Aduwo, who made the demand at the weekend while briefing newsmen in Lagos, said internal democracy in all the parties in the country posed a major challenge to the 2015 election.
Aduwo, who also spoke against the background of intense horse trading and scheming for the governorship seat of the state, stressed that there was the need for the ruling PDP and the people of the state to allow Umar clinch the party’s ticket for the race.
He hinged the support of the civil society groups for Umar on the strides he had recorded in the administration of the state since assumption of office, including saving more than N20 billion for the state and payment of all inherited debts.
“These are some of the qualities of a good leader, considering the fact that the state had almost been thrown into turmoil until his assumption of office”, Aduwo said.
“For stability, the acting governor must be allowed to contest. I urge the PDP leadership to do the needful in this regard .Since he assumed office in acting capacity, he has demonstrated high level of transparency and accountability in managingthe state’s funds,” he added.
