Nigeria: Ogun to Train Farmers On New Cassava Varieties
BY ABU IDRISU:
Farmers in Ogun State are to be trained specially on methods of farming new cassava varieties, as they received stems from the cassava preparatory to the next planting season of the crop that is fast gaining economic popularity in Nigeria.
Director, Cassava Revolution Programme of the State, Mrs. Kehinde Jokotaye, who gave this hint during the distribution ceremony, said that the farmers would be trained on the peculiarities of this cassava variety and best planting methods among other skills.
Ogun State Commissioner for Agriculture, Mrs. Ronke Sokefun, noted at the first official harvest of cassava at Ibiade, in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area that distribution of the stems is in fulfillment of the government's promise to farmers to help improve their standard of living.
Represented by the Director, Planning, Research and Statistic, Rev. Gbile Olugbebi, the commissioner said it was the duty of the government to encourage farmers by providing them with necessary farm inputs, which necessitated the giving of 10 bundles of cassava, stem each for planting.
She explained that the cassava varieties were the improved ones, noting that they grow faster and end up good after processing, especially for food produce like garri, lafun among others.
"This cassava variety is called TMS/92/0326 and TME419, they are the improved variety.
"They were selected because of their specialties and they fit in well for our conventional products like garri, lafun and others," she said.
