Rainstorm wreaks havoc in Edo community
Over 3,000 persons, including women and children, have been rendered homeless following the destruction visited on them by rainstorm, which recently ravaged Fugar community in Etsako-Central Local Government Area of Edo State.
Reports had it that the rainstorm, which devastated the town during a heavy downpour on Monday, left hundreds of livestock dead while two persons, who were initially hospitalised for injuries sustained, have gone home.
Edo State Deputy Governor, Pius Odubu, who visited the victims and carried out an on-the-spot assessment, assured them that government would begin supply of relief materials in the coming days to cushion the effect of the disaster.
The deputy governor, who was accompanied by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Lucky James, and other government functionaries, said he was in the town to assess the extent of damage done by the rainstorm.
Odubu, who expressed shock over the extent of the disaster, commiserated with the residents over the loss of property and the temporary displacement occasioned by the devastation.
He said the state government would send SOS to the Federal Government to assist in restoring their normal lives, adding that the state government has assured all those affected and the entire resident in the community of its support.
Some of the affected victims, who spoke through an interpreter, thanked the state government for the on-the-spot-assessment visit and its willingness to offer them a lifeline “at this trying moment.”
Meanwhile, the deputy governor and his high-powered delegation were also at the office of Etsako-Central Council Chairman, Emmanuel Momoh, who disclosed that the council has started distribution of relief materials, noting that 116 houses were affected, including electricity polls.
