Falcons’ Coach Promises Banyana Tough S’final Clash Today
Super Falcons Head Coach, Edwin Okon, has said that South African opponents Banyana Banyana will not be lucky twice in the semi finals of the ongoing African Women Championship (AWC) in Namibia today.
The clash today at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek, Namibia, is a rematch of the 2012 edition in Equatorial Guinea that saw the South Africans stun the Nigerians 1-0 in the semi final clash at the Nkoantoma Stadium in Bata.
The Falcons topped Group A with 100 per cent record on nine points while the 2012 AWC finalists finished as runners-up in Group B behind leaders, the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroun.
Okon said his players are angry as well as hungry and will certainly punish the South Africans for the 2012 AWC semi-final defeat in Equatorial Guinea.
"We're angry, hungry and won't allow ourselves to be beaten twice by the South Africans at same stage of the championship.
"We must win the clash as it is quite important to our qualification for the World Cup in Canada.
"We want to reclaim the AWC title we lost to Equatorial Guinea in 2012 and head to the World Cup as champions.
"We've achieved 100 per cent record in our group matches but the tie against South Africa is the most crucial game; we must win to re-establish our superiority over the Southern African side.
"The players are 100 per cent in shape and raring to punish South Africa for last championship loss," said the former Falconets and Rivers Angels head coach to supersport.com.
The winners of the semifinal clash will automatically qualify for the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup in Canada.
The six-time African champions finished a distant fourth in the last championship in Equatorial Guinea after losing the third place match 0-1 to the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroun.
