Buhari Urges Other APC Presidential Aspirants to Emulate Saraki

The former Head of State and one of the presidential aspirants on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), has urged other aspirants to consider toeing the line of  Senator Bukola Saraki and withdraw from the presidential race.

In a statement issued on behalf  Buhari Campaign Organisation by Mr. Osita Okechukwu, the former head of state hailed Saraki for his nobility, patriotism and uncommon resolve to place the collective interest of the country and our great party above personal interest, as evidenced by his withdrawal from the presidential race.

“There is no doubt that Saraki is eminently qualified to run for president going by his enviable achievements as Governor of Kwara State, being the heir of the political dynasty of the famous majority leader of the Second Republic Senate, Dr Abubakar Olusola Saraki, of blessed memory and the decisive role he played in enriching the APC with progressives from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“We are grateful that he agrees with the Buahri Campaign Organisation by saying, ‘I don’t think that our party can afford too much internal rancour going into next year’s election. I therefore think some of us need to make the sacrifice and be part of the solution, rather than part of the problem.’  It is our position that consensus is better than acrimonious, gruesome and monetised indirect primary,”  the statement said.

Buhari campaign group said Saraki had further demonstrated his intense passion for sustaining Nigeria’s fledgling democracy.
While commending Saraki for his uncommon sacrifice, the campaign team said other aspirants, “who though eminently qualified, to eschew personal interest and emulate our distinguish senator and join hands with Buhari to salvage our dear country from dangerous slide to failed state.

“In summary, like Senator Saraki said, to salvage the country, our great party must be united, cohesive and mobile; otherwise the ruling PDP that boasted to rule Nigeria uninterrupted for 60 years, that has polarised the country into ethno-religious fragments and squandered our riches, will further impoverish the citizenry,” the group said.

Saraki, had while announcing his withdrawal, maintained that  he did not leave the ruling party PDP to join the opposition because of any personal interest.

“We need to change the way the country is run, we need change in our security and the values we place on human life, we need to change the current disgraceful situation in security and corruption. And I believe only the APC can bring about this change and give our country the leadership it deserves,” he said.

Meanwhile, a long-standing associate of the former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, Chief Oyewole Fashawe, has said the ex-president did not commend  or condemn any candidate willing to contest in the forthcoming elections in Nigeria, contrary to insinuations from certain quarters.

In a statement monday, Fashawe said rather, the elder statesman is believed to be working tirelessly behind the scene to ensure a secure and rancour-free atmosphere for free and fair elections devoid of blood-letting and wanton destruction of lives and property.

Speaking from Abeokuta in Ogun State, Fashawe who is the Asiwaju of Owo in Ondo State, disclosed that he was unequivocally talking on behalf of the former president whom he said “sees the current gladiators in all the parties as his political children and associates; hence he would not endorse one over the other no matter the amount of pressure from any quarter.”

According to Fashawe, “Baba has not endorsed anyone and has not condemned anyone. A statesman of his stature and pedigree can only pray and work towards peace and progress in Nigeria, Africa and the world at large. Those trying to exploit his friendliness to gain political advantage over other contenders are being unfair and doing so without Obasanjo’s approval.”
