Ladies and Gentlemen.
I feel honoured to be amongst you at this special gathering today. I feel truly honoured by your presence that you could attend this event; I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
We are all here because we believe that Ankpa LGA my home, my root, my father land, and my constituency, ANKPA 1 whom I stand to represent at the Kogi state House of assembly can be made better. We are here because we know that change must come and that change will come because of you.
Let me not forget to appreciate the youths of Ankpa 1 who want to see our home develop, prosper and become one among the best, raised their hard-earned money through fund raised to purchased the Nomination form for me. I say a big THANK YOU. I consider it a golden opportunity given to me by you to display our courage, rekindle our innovative instinct, showcase our character and turn our dreams into reality.
Today, I come to you as a full blown party member who defines himself in the spirit of community service and party development.
Whatever brought us here, the love for, and the need to serve our people is supreme. I therefore come to you with this pledge of service and all sense of commitment trusting also to receive the same measure of goodwill and acceptance by all of you.
I have been asked many times why I am always seeking to become an honourable member at the state house of assembly. My passion for governance is that of a man who wants to do more because there is so much more to be done in fixing my constituency. My story is the story of a young man who has always stands for his people; this passion continues to grow as long as this government is not really doing the fixing. I have what it takes to bring people together and turn things around for the better. It is the duty of the legislator to watch and control the government (executive arm); in terms of making laws and/or legislation that will affect the people positively. It is the arm of government that defines democracy, “Government of the people, by the people and for the people. But our present representation at the state level is far below this especially in terms of quality legislation, which includes oversight, consensus building and law making.
The primary purpose of the legislature is proper representation. The legislature is the ear and eye of the people, and must be seen to give effect to the yearning and aspiration. I can’t see that happening particularly in Ankpa 1 constituency. It is rather unfortunate that we have found ourselves in this situation. A leader that cannot provide security and welfare to his people, a leader that cannot use his influence and power and a legislator to bring development to his people is not worthy to be called a leader. As I move around interacting with stakeholders, elders, religious leaders, the youths, and our mothers, I listen to their concerns about unfulfilled expectations, frustrations, and sometimes disillusionment. Yet I still see excitement, determination, and hope on their faces.
In the circumstances and after a thorough self examination, consultations, and prayers with my family, I, Honourable Ahmed Momodu Mohammed have decided to humbly offer myself as a candidate in the Ankpa 1 constituency, Kogi State House of Assembly Primaries of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party, in order to stand for the 2015 elections. I pledge once again to all the people of my constituency that we are in a threshold of a new era; an era that beckons for a new kind of leadership; a leadership that is un contaminated by the prejudices of the past; a leadership committed to change; a leadership that reinvents government, to solve the everyday problems that confront the its people.
I will assemble the best brains in the land, consult with the elders, stakeholder, and provide the political will and commitment so that jointly, we will take our issues to the house of assembly, debate on it, and make sure it is assented by the Governor of the state, and with the cooperation of all of you, build the home of our dreams.
The six (6) priorities are:
-Effective legislation and representation.
-Youth empowerment/Entrepreneurship programs.
-Employment generation for graduates and school leavers.
-Development of basic and social amenities
-Introducing a welfare package for the elderly, widows and the less privilege.
-Education and social services
We need a strong, dynamic, decisive, competent and visionary leadership and representation that can halt the current drift of the ship of state, create jobs, rebuild our dead roads, our hospitals, and our dark years without electricity, tackle insecurity in a decisive, multi-pronged way. This is the change we want and deserve and that is why I am a proud member of this platform for change. I am particularly proud that our party has adopted the innovative Modified Open Primaries in selecting its flag bearers at all levels. This will ensure the emergence of the most popular candidates whose mandate will be informed by the popular will of the members of our party.
My dear good people of Ankpa I want all of you to know that I am one of you and I will never let you down! I want you to know that I will keep hope alive; I want you to know that your time has come.
My appreciation also to the leadership of our party for the warm reception accorded me deserving of any full-fledged party stalwart.
This kind reception did not begin from today, it began from the day I signified the intention of joining this great party.
Finally, I would appeal to all political actors, especially my fellow aspirants to go into the field armed with our rules of engagements.
No one’s ambition is worth the peace and stability of our people. We should eschew antagonism or stoking primordial sentiments.
Elections would come and go but the people will always be together. Damaging the harmony we enjoy as a people would have dire consequences on all of us and is the gravest disservice anyone can do for our dear state.
I thank you all for your valuable time and this august reception.
