‘KOGI NEEDS N2.5BN TO FIGHT CRIME’

BY ABU IDRISU:

The Kogi State government has said that it needs N2.5 billion annually to adequate secure lives and property, including its waterways.
Executive Chairman, Kogi State Security Trust Fund, Joseph Faniyi, disclosed this yesterday in Lokoja during a press briefing.
He said in recent times, the state has recorded several cases of violent crimes, including robberies and bombing of banks, police and prison formations, adding that the search for alternative sources of funding to tackle the current security challenges in the state led to the constitution of a committee for the establishment of the fund.
“Our study has shown clearly that the problem of the police force is essentially related to logistics mobility, communications and kitting among others. The fund would be a practical response to the reality of the operational deficiency of the police and other federal agencies in the state due to years of neglect by the federal government, particularly in the area of funding and provision of modern equipment,” he said.
He said funds realised from the launch would be operated on a Public-Private-Partnership basis so as to guarantee regular access to funding, faster decision making and accountability.
