Jonathan, Tinubu Condemn Kaduna Bombings
In a statement by Jonathan's Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, the president denounced the dastardly act targeted at prominent political and religious leaders by terrorists and enemies of the nation in an odious attempt to inflame passions and exacerbate disquiet, fear, insecurity and sectional divisions in the country.
"While thanking God Almighty for sparing the lives of General Buhari and Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, the President extends sincere condolences to the families of those who were sadly killed by the bomb blasts.
"President Jonathan also commiserates with all those who were injured in the twin bombings in this Holy Month of Ramadan which defies the tenets of Islam, and provide further proof that the terrorists are nothing but blood-thirsty extremists bent on undermining the unity and progress of the nation,” he said.
Also condemning the attack, a former Lagos State governor, Senator Bola Tinubu, lamented that, “the bomb attack today on General Buhari, one of the national leaders of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and innocent Nigerians confirms that our county is in the grip of terror.
“Sadly, we are in the hands of a bungling, buck passing and blackmailing presidency. I condemn in the strongest terms the attack on General Buhari and his convoy and the innocent Nigerians that suffered untimely deaths. I thank God that Gen. Buhari's life was spared for greater service to the fatherland.
“Under an increasingly incompetent and incoherent PDP-led government, Nigeria slips into a low intensity war. We are all marked people under a government that prefers to label and attack opposition rather than apply itself to providing security and good governance.
“There can be no justification for the continued loss of innocent lives and the unending attacks. I call upon those with the power, the resources and in charge of the security apparatus of this country to get up and do something before we all are consumed.”
CNPP Seeks Probe of Bomb Blasts
As expected, there have been several reactions trailing the bomb blasts, with the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP), which expressed outrage at the attacks, calling for a thorough investigation to unravel the brains behind the sordid incident.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Osita Okechukwu, the group condemned in no uncertain terms the bomb blasts.
“The serial bomb blast across the country is a cause for concern; accordingly we call for thorough investigation. For we are witnesses how rogue regimes in certain climes bomb their citizens under the pretence of the extremist insurgents like Boko Haram.
“Our recent history reminds us of the NADECO days when we witnessed series of bomb blasts in Lagos traced to then General Sani Abacha's regime. This makes it imperative for a thorough investigation,” it said.
Similarly, a political interest group, the Buhari Vanguard, while condemning the bomb blasts, alleged that the entourage of the former Head of State, Buhari, might have been the target of the attack.
The group, in a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Mr. Jasper Azuatalam, expressed worry that these attacks by suspected Boko Haram members might assume a very dangerous dimension if if is not controlled immediately.
“What is more shocking is that the bomb blasts were targeted at popular Nigerian leaders, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, a leader of the All progressives Congress (APC) and Dahiru Bauchi, a popular Islamic cleric,” it said.
