NEMA, SEMA Register 500 Internally Displaced Persons In Gombe

Following the recent insurgent attack in Damboa, Borno State that resulted in a large influx of internally displaced persons to Gombe State, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in collaboration with the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) have so far evacuated and registered about 500 persons who were stranded in motor parks and some major highways to various camps in the state.
The director general of NEMA, Muhammad Sani Sidi urged the displaced persons to be law abiding while in the camp and reiterated the agency’s readiness to continue providing support for persons in distress. The director general who was represented by the assistant director, Relief and Rehabilitation, Saidu Ahmed Minin gave this advice while opening the refugee camp at Bye-pass Road, Gombe yesterday.
Also speaking, the executive secretary, SEMA, Danlami Arab Rukujei thanked the agency for the quick response and noted that the state government was gradually becoming overwhelmed with the large influx of people especially from neighbouring states of Yobe and Borno. He further stated that the state government has so far registered about 7,770 persons who mostly live with their relatives in the host communities.
Relief materials provided in the camps are food and other items including blankets, mattresses, nylon mats, buckets, towels and sanitary pads. Others are rice, maize, sugar, millet, beans, powdered milk and vegetable oil.
Meanwhile, the Head of operations NEMA, Hajiya Zainab Umar has commended the efforts of the State Government in providing enough securities to guard the camps by mobilizing men of Nigerian security and Civil Defence Corps and other security Agents in the Camps.
Responding to questions on the security arrangement in the camp by the Nigerian Police, the Police public Relations Officer, Gombe State Command, DSP Fwaje Atajiri said there is no special security arrangement for the displaced persons by the Command but we are duty bond to protect the lives and properties of every citizens and people domiciled in Gombe State.
