Aregbesola files appeal against Omisore’s petition
Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, on Thursday, filed a reply against the petition of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s candidate at the August 9 Osun governorship election, Iyiola Omisore, challenging the credibility of the poll.
The reply was filed along with statements of about 600 witnesses lined up to defend Aregbesola’s mandate.
The governor, who was APC’s candidate at the election, is the first respondent in the petition, while the APC is the second respondent.
The second respondent had earlier filed its reply against the same petition and frontloading no less than 600 people to testify and defend Aregbesola’s mandate.
Filing the reply on Thursday, one of the lead counsels to Aregbesola, Kunle Adegoke, said the witnesses, whose statements were being filed, were real voters during the election, while the ones earlier filed on behalf of the party (second respondent) were majorly polling agents.
In the reply, Aregbesola was praying the tribunal to dismiss the PDP candidate’s petition, saying it is baseless and mere wasting of time.
Secretary to State Government, Moshood Adeoti, who was among the witness listed, after deposing to his witness in court, said the petition against the re-election of his principal would fail.
He said it was to the knowledge of everybody that the election was peaceful and reflected the wishes of the people as against the allegation of the petitioners.
Adeoti wondered why the PDP could be alleging in the petition that he was distributing money on the election day, even when it was the PDP leaders and members that perpetrated such act.
He stressed that there was no malpractice carried out by the APC or its leaders to warrant the cancellation of the election, adding that Aregbesola and his party, APC, would eventually be vindicated.
Besides, the state Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, Mofolake Adegboyega, another witness, said the petition was baseless and could not have any effect on the election, because it reflected the wishes of the people.
