Speaker Yakubu Dogara Tested, Trusted – Tambuwal
Sokoto State governor and immediate past speaker, House of Representatives, Hon Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, affirmed yesterday that his successor, Hon. Yakubu Dogara is tested and trusted as far as leadership is concerned.
Tambuwal, who said it was God and competence that gave Hon. Dogara the speakership, also disclosed that Dogara is the only lawmaker to have chaired the Committee on House Services for two terms since the return of democracy in 1999.
Speaking when leaders of the Sayawa Community of Bogoro and Tafawa Balewa local government area of Bauchi State paid him a thank you visit, Tambuwal said Dogara’s competence led to his endorsement by eight of the 10 Principal Officers of the 7th National Assembly.
Yakubu Dogara“When Dogara joined us at the 6th Assembly, the leadership identified him and made him a chairman of a committee. It was a rare privilege because in the Legislature, we always cherished ranking but we also identified and appreciated those that we knew could deliver even though they were new. And Yakubu Dogara was identified as such a person.
“The acknowledgement of Dogara’s competence did not start with me. It started from the time of Hon Patricia Etteh and Hon Dimeji Bankole when they entrusted him with a sensitive position of the chairman of House Services Committee.
“The committee is one of the most sensitive in the legislature. Apart from taking care of the welfare of members, the committee oversees all procurement processes. As the speaker, I only did what my predecessors did by giving Dogara this sensitive position.
“No person, as far as I know, has ever served as chairman of the House Services committee in two dispensations. Dogara broke that jinx. All through my tenure, I brought Dogara close to me, even though he did not support my emergence as speaker because he decided to tow party line. But I decided to bring him close to myself and I said by that, we are doing two things. To show everybody who cares to understand that this leadership is all embracing; it’s not about those who supported me to become speaker, but it’s about recognising the potentialities of even those who did not. Since we are all talking about the National Assembly and the Federal Republic of Nigeria because I had found in him a person who is competent, accommodating, and with capacity to lead.”
“Anyone doubting Dogara’s ability to lead, should ask members of the 7th Assembly how he handled their matter. So we supported Dogara not for any reason but because he was competent to deliver on any task given to him,” Tambuwal disclosed.
