NEMA Receives 12,000 Nigerian Returnees from Cameroun

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has revealed that it has received about 12,000 Nigerians who fled insurgency attacks in their communities in the North-east  to the Republic of Cameroun.

NEMA in a statement signed and issued by it Senior Information Officer, Sani Datti,  stated that the fleeing Nigerians have started arriving home through the border post in Sahuda,  Mubi South in Adamawa State.

The statement stated that the returnees are currently being screened by the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) and the security agencies.

“NEMA has so far received 1,121 of the returnees from the NIS at the border post, out of which 650 have been transported to Borno State, while the remaining are still at Malkohi Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Yola.

“In the mean time, NEMA is providing food and non-food items as well as medical cover to cater for the returnees at the border while awaiting the conclusion of the immigration and security screening. Arrangements have also been concluded to locate the returnees to a new camp in Fufore, Adamawa State, for proper care,” it stated.

NEMA has also established contacts with the Borno State Government over the returnees who are mostly from the state.

In another development, a group of trained local hunters on Wednesay in Gulak village of Madagali Local Government Area in Adamawa State have arrested three members of the Boko Haram sect.

A member representing Madagali constituency in the state House of Assembly, Hon. Emmanuel Tsamdu, confirmed the arrest of the three insurgents.

He said the development was a reprisals attacks launched by the hunters against the insurgents  who killed five people in Kulbagawa village of Madagali council about three days ago

Tsamdu said the arrest was possible because of the training the local hunters received which enabled them to chase the insurgents to their hideout.

“The effort made by our youths yesterday is commendable as report reaching us is that they have arrested three members of Boko Haram in Gulak. The local hunters in Madagali are joining forces with those from Gombi areas to chase them (Boko Haram) out of our territory,” Tsamdu said.

“The locals from Gombi seem to know the terrain and the hideout of this wicked people, their coming will eventually  boost the morale of those youths from Madagali and other areas for the fight against the insurgents,” he added.
He praised the agile spirit of the youths and called on security agencies to join effort with them to bring an end to the activities of Boko Haram in the entire North-east.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Foundation for the Support of Victims of Terrorism (VSF) has given N140 million to seven hospitals in the troubled Northeastern region to subsidise the medical bills of victims of Boko Haram insurgency.
The seven hospitals benefitting from the gesture include University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Specialist Hospital Maiduguri, Specialist Hospital Damaturu, Federal Medical Centre Gombe, Specialist Hospital Gombe, Federal Medical Centre Yola and Specialist Hospital Yola.
Presenting the cheque of N20 million each to two benefitting hospitals in Borno state, University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and Specialist Hospital Maiduguri, the Executive Director the foundation, Prof. Sunday  Ochoche, said it became imperative to give out the assistance because so much was incurred on treatment of the victims of the numerous attacks of the insurgents in the region.

Ochoche, who explained that at the two separate presentation of cheque at the two medical facilities in Maiduguri, that no single organisation can meet the huge need of the region arising from the insurgency, called on the entire nation to rise up to the occasion and assist the troubled region.

Ochoche, who signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the two institutions, said the Victims Support Fund has come to realise that it has to do something immediately to assist in offsetting the heavy medical bills of the victims of the insurgency which daily pile up.

He noted that N20 million donation to each of the hospitals was a drop of water in the large ocean of medical bills procured by the victims of Boko Haram.
He said: “We just want to show that we are with them,” promising that “It is not the final support to the hospitals.”

Receiving the cheque on behalf of Specialist Hospital Maiduguri is the Permanent Secretary in Borno State Ministry of Health, Alhaji Ahmed Sanda while the Chief Medical Director of the UMTH, Professor AbdulRahman Tahir collected for his hospital.

Both Sanda and Tahir while expressing gratitude to the foundation, insisted that much has been incurred in taking care of the victims of insurgency and seek for additional gesture.

Tahir complained that over N150 million was incurred in the treatment of victims of insurgency by the UMTH and that some of the institution’s facilities are now down because they have been overstretched.
