FRSC To Step-up Ember Months Patrols

The Corps-Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission, Boboye
Oyeyemi, has assured Nigerians the public of improved patrol
operations as they enter the “ember months.”

“Ember months” refer to the last four months of the year -September,
October, November and December.

Boboye told State House correspondents this after meeting with Vice
President Yemi Osinbajo inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja

He further assured that officials of the commission were better placed
to reduce carnage on the nation’s roads during the period.

He said, “I want to assure Nigerians that we are going to witness much
improved patrol operations starting from next month, September towards
October, November, December.

“I think we have got much support this year. Just early this week, we
took delivery of the newly supplied ambulances by the World Bank,
through the Federal Ministry of Works and also with the logistics we
have now, the personnel, I think we are going to do much better.

“Don’t forget that by last year for the same period compared to 2013,
we were able to reduce crashes by 42 per cent and fatality by 46 per
cent and I think and going with the trend we are going now, we have
been able to stem the tide with 12 percent.

“I believe we are on course; the personnel have been trained and the
training is continuous and the logistics are in place. And we are also
devoting more time on public education and from September, we are
commencing the enforcement of speed limiting device.”

Boboye said the enforcement of the speed limiting device would give
the commission the leeway.

He added that the Operation Scorpion was ongoing and that is dealing
decisively with trailers, trucks, the issues of tyres, unsecured
containers and unsecured loads.

Boboye said over 1,600 vehicles had so far been impounded.

He disclosed that the training programmes for the tankers and trailer
drivers is going on.

He said out of the 12 locations, seven had been completed while the
remaining five would be completed this week.

“By the time we go into the ember months and the meetings we are
having with key stakeholders, I think we are more positioned this year
to get a better result.

“I want to assure Nigerians that we are ready and with the support of
all the key stakeholders, we will be able to get something much better
than 2014 ” he added.
