Assembly dissolves LG councils in Akwa Ibom
The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly on Thursday dissolved the 31 Local Government Councils in the state.
The Speaker of the House, Aniekan Uko, who made the pronouncement in Uyo, directed the chairmen to handover all government property to the councils’ Head of Service by July 10.
Uko said this was in line with the 1999 Constitution as amended, as the tenure of the present local government chairmen would expire by 12 midnight on July 10.
Uko recalled that the councils were inaugurated on July 11, 2012 for three years tenure.
He also directed the Clerk of the House, Mandu Umoren, to communicate the decision of the House to Governor Udom Emmanuel for necessary action.
Earlier, the Leader of the House, Udo Kerien (PDP), moved a motion for the dissolution of the councils and was seconded by Usoro Akpausoh (PDP-Esit Eket/Ibeno).
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the House also received a Notice of Motion on the Establishment of Nuclear Plant in Akwa Ibom State, sponsored by Nse Essien (PDP- Onna).
In the motion, he urged the assembly to pass a resolution directing the National Atomic Energy Commission and indeed Federal Government to reconsider its desire to build nuclear plants in the state due to its dense population.
The motion also urged the Federal Government to explore other available and harmless sources of power in the state, including increasing the capacity of Ibom Power Plant.
The speaker of the House referred the motion to the Committee on the Environment for indepth study and to report back to the House within one week.
