PMB Appoints Amina Zakari INEC Chair As Jega Bows Out

President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Mrs Amina Bala Zakari as the acting chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following the end of Prof Attahiru Jega’s tenure yesterday.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by the director of communications at the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Haruna Imrana.
According to the statement, the head of the civil service of the federation, Barr. Danladi Kifasi, who conveyed the appointment in a letter, said Mrs Zakari’s appointment took immediate effect (from yesterday, June 30, 2015) until the appointment of a substantive chairman.
Zakari is presently a national electoral commissioner at INEC.
In a related development, Jega, a professor of political economy, finally bowed out of office yesterday.
Meanwhile, Jega had handed over to a national commissioner representing Sokoto State (North-West), Ambassador Mohammed Wali, pending the appointment of a new chairman by President Buhari. Wali will also bow out on August 11, 2015.
Jega, who concluded his five-year tenure yesterday, was appointed by President Goodluck Jonathan in June 2010 and oversaw the conduct of the 2011 and 2015 general elections.
The former INEC boss, who spoke in an interview with newsmen after an indoor handover ceremony held at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve the country alongside other management staff of INEC.
“We feel great, we thank God Almighty for the opportunity to serve the country. The future is bright for the Commission and the country,’’ Jega said.
INEC secretary, Mrs Augusta Ogakwu, confirmed to newsmen that Jega had handed over to Amb. Mohammed Wali at the indoor ceremony pending the appointment of a new chairman by the president.
“We believe we will soon hear what will happen next from the president,’’ she said, adding that while handing over, Jega encouraged the Commission to keep the flag flying.
“Jega said in whatever we have achieved, we should keep it up and do more because there are still a lot to be done,’’ she said.
Similarly, the tenure of six national commissioners also expired yesterday.
The commissioners affected are Col. M.K. Hammanga (retd), Adamawa State (North East); Dr Ishmael Jikiri Igbani, Rivers State (South South); Prof Lai Olurode, Osun State (South West); Dame Gladys Nne Nwafor, Abia State (South East); Mrs Thelma Amata Iremiren, Delta State (South South), and Engr. Dr Nuru Yakubu, Yobe State (North-East).
Four other national commissioners are to leave in July and August this year.
They are Dr Abdulkadir Oniyangi, Kwara State (North Central), July 21; Mrs Amina Bala Zakari, Jigawa State (North-West), July 21; Dr Chris Iyimoga, Nasarawa State(North Central), August 11, 2015, and Amb. Mohammed Ahmad Wali, Sokoto State (North West), August 11, 2015.
