Why We Stopped WAEC Fees In Kogi – Gov Idris

BY ABU IDRISU

Kogi State governor, Capt. Idris Wada has said that payment of WAEC examination fees by the state government was stopped as a result of manipulation by some dubious people scattered around the project.

Addressing political office holders yesterday at Glass House, Lokoja, the governor lamented that the WAEC fees had been inflated by some unscrupulous persons, adding that this did not go down well with the state government considering what the state gets from the Federation Account monthly.

According to him, when he assumed office in 2012, N270million was paid as WAEC fees for the students, stressing that in 2013, the amount jumped to over N300million and in 2015, it increased to about N500million.

He said that the state government does not have such amount of money at present, noting that any parent that paid the WAEC fees of his or her wards can forward the receipts to the government for a refund.

“I am convinced that the figure they have given us was inflated and we cannot be throwing money away because we have a lot of development to do”.

“It’s unfortunate that people we entrusted with the good intention have turned around to manipulate instead of serving the people; we have looked into it and we are taking a major step to correct this unwarranted act,” he said.
