MASSOB Protest: Deputy Senate President Condemns South-east Killings
The Deputy Senate President, Mr Ike Ekweremadu, has condemned in strong terms, the reported killing of young men and women by security operatives in parts of the South-east Nigeria.
At Tuesday’s legislative proceedings at the Senate, Senator Ekweremadu raised a point of order drawing the attention of the Upper Chamber to the bloodbath in the South-East region of the country on Monday.
The Deputy President of the Senate further noted that the country had recorded so much bloodshed in various parts of the country in the past, urging security agencies to apply caution in quelling perceived disturbances in any part of Nigeria.
MASSOB Clash With Police
On Monday members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra and the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) clashed with security operatives in some states in the south east.
Two police officials were reported killed, with some other persons injured.
Members of the groups also claimed that some of their members were killed.
Tension had started in Anambra State, as persons suspected to be members of MASSOB mounted road blocks and set bonfire in Nkpor and Onitsha causing the roads to be deserted.
According to the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Mr Hassan Karma, the suspected members of MASSOB gathered at a school in Nkpor with identifying flags emblazoned with the rising sun symbols and charms but with mission unknown.
Agitation For Biafra Republic
Also, in Asaba, the Delta State’s capital, several people were injured as a planned protest by members of MASSOB degenerated into a fight.
The MASSOB members had planned peaceful protests across south eastern states to mark 49 years of the agitation for Biafra Republic (1967 to 2016), on Monday.
The fight reportedly broke out when Police tried to disperse the protesters by firing teargas at them.
This action infuriated the protesters who allegedly reacted angrily and this degenerated into a larger fracas.
Two policemen died in the process.
The Police, however, arrested eight and wounded four members of MASSOB alleged to have been involved in the killing of the two policemen.
The arrests were made by the Delta State Police Command on Monday.
According to a statement signed by the acting Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Charles Muka, the members of the group attacked policemen and army patrol team at three locations at Cable Point and Abraka areas where they killed two policeman, injured two others and made away with one AK.47 rifle and one smoke gunner.
